โก What Is a Capacitor?
A capacitor stores electricity temporarily and releases it when needed. Think of it like a rechargeable battery โ but much faster at charging and discharging.
In appliances, capacitors do two main jobs:
- Start & Run motors โ fridges, AC units, washing machines, pumps
- Smooth power supplies โ in circuit boards (PSUs, monitors, microwave boards)

๐ก Tip: Electrolytic capacitors fail most often โ they have liquid inside that dries out over time. If you open an appliance and see a bulging can, you've found your problem 90% of the time.
๐๏ธ Visual Inspection โ The #1 Diagnostic Tool
Before you even touch your multimeter, look at every capacitor. Visual signs are the fastest way to find failures.
๐ฉ Telltale Signs of a Bad Capacitor
| Symptom | What to Look For | Verdict |
| Bulging top | The metal top is domed instead of flat | Replace |
| Leaking electrolyte | Brown, crusty, or oily residue at the base | Replace |
| Cracked casing | Visible crack in the plastic or ceramic | Replace |
| Rust / corrosion | Rusty legs or corrosion on the PCB around the cap | Likely bad |
| Scorch marks | Darkened or burnt board around the capacitor | Replace |
| Leg broken off | One leg snapped or separated from the board | Replace |
| Relief vent blown | The scored "X" or "Y" on top has burst open | Replace |
| Looks perfectly normal | Flat top, clean, no marks | Test further |
๐ก Golden rule: If you see any of the top 3 signs (bulging, leaking, cracked), don't bother testing โ just replace it. A capacitor that looks bad is bad.
๐ก๏ธ How To Safely Discharge a Capacitor
This is the most important skill in this lesson. A big motor start capacitor (say, 300ยตF at 250V) can hold a terrifying amount of energy.
- Unplug the device โ always. Never work on a plugged-in appliance.
- Wait 5 minutes โ large capacitors can hold charge for minutes after unplugging.
- Use an insulated screwdriver (for large motor caps): Hold by the insulated handle, touch the blade across both terminals. You'll see a spark โ that's normal. For small board caps: Use a 1kฮฉโ10kฮฉ resistor or a 12V car bulb across the legs to drain smoothly without sparking.
- Verify with multimeter: Set to DC volts. Touch probes across the terminals. Should read near 0V. Above 5V? Discharge again.
๐ด Safety note: A screwdriver discharge hard-shorts the cap. For electrolytic caps on circuit boards, the sudden current surge can damage the board. Use a resistor (1-10kฮฉ, 2W+) or a 12V incandescent bulb for board-level work.

When to Skip Testing
Capacitors are cheap. Electrolytics cost $1-5. Motor run caps cost $10-20. If visual inspection is suspicious, or the cap is over 10 years old, just replace it.
Test when:
- The cap looks perfect but the device doesn't work
- You want to confirm before ordering a replacement
- You're learning and want to build your diagnostic skills
